If you were to go on Tik-Tok or Instagram, you would understand where the young couples lifestyles sometimes referred to as DINKs would be like. If you do not have any idea, you can read on.
Couples that stay together in a household, earning double income, and do not intend to have children are referred to as the ‘DINKs’ referred to as ‘Double Income, No Children’. Their situation is as such mainly by choice and that is the preference that they liked due to sacrificing for better career advancement, a chosen lifestyle, committing to their hobbies or self-enrichment. Every couple has their own reasons for making this choice, and it shouldn’t be viewed as a stigma. Instead, it can be understood as a valid lifestyle decision—one that, in its own way, may even contribute to easing the pressures of an increasingly populated world in this time and era.
If a couple has double income, but does not spend it on dependents or children, it indirectly translates to a higher disposable income and therefore they tend to lean towards a more affluent lifestyle of luxuries, such as for their own self enrichment, for savings, investments, vacations, luxury goods and obviously properties.
Interestingly, many young individuals entering the real estate industry today share a common mindset—they are ambitious, driven, and motivated to build a lifestyle that they dream of.
While they may be new to the field, they are not just “rookies” learning the ropes. Instead, they are stepping into the market with purpose—leveraging opportunities not only to sell properties, but to grow and seek financial freedom.
These groups are not just earning well, but are actively investing in property themselves, gaining firsthand knowledge and mastering the market they operate in.
But, what do DINKs particularly look for in a perfect home? Since they live a lavish, luxury lifestyle with double income to spend on themselves, their perfect home is a mix of luxury, convenience and requires space for their personal hobbies and activities.
Convenience and lifestyle are key priorities. DINK homeowners are drawn to well-connected urban environments that place them close to amenities. Easy access to restaurants, retail, entertainment, and public transport supports a vibrant, flexible lifestyle that aligns with how they live, work, and unwind.
Design wise, a sustainable and eco friendly set up is significant consideration for the DINKs. From open floor plans and dedicated work spaces to smart technology, energy efficient and sustainable design around the house is a must have.
DINKS take their pets seriously, sometimes referring to them as ‘fur-babies’. Their pets are part of the family, where they play an integral role in their daily life. Therefore homes that cater to this lifestyle are highly valued: think safe, pet-friendly spaces, ample greenery, secure outdoor areas, proper fencing, patios, and thoughtfully designed zones for pet beds and supplies.
As this demographic continues to grow worldwide from China to Singapore to Malaysia, it is prevalent and the numbers are rising here in our home country too, we can expect these trends to shape the future of space and home designs in Malaysia in the coming future.
